Are franchise agreements automatically renewed?

Franchise agreements are for a limited time, usually 5 or 10 years, and the right to renew is not guaranteed.  Also, the renewal may not be under the original terms. Royalties may increase, new design standards may need to be implemented or territory size may be reduced.
